The CMS PTSA offers grants to CMS staff members to help enhance the learning environment at Community Middle School. Financial assistance is provided to staff members with ideas for projects that would benefit their students. The grants cover many different educational areas and usually range from $200 to $500 per project.
The PTSA awarded 7 Mini Grants for the 2010-2011 school year totaling $2,031.52. Mini Grant recipients were as follows:
Jill Marsch - Grade 7 Pre-Algebra – Classroom set of White board, dry-erase markers & erasers – $231
The grant money will be used for a classroom set of whiteboards, markers & erasers. The whiteboards and markers are an interesting and motivating medium for students as an alternative to paper and pencil work. http://www.dryerase.com/G1116.htm
Donna Gill, Susie Zhao, Shayne Christie, Janice Chai, Virginia Baner, Jeanne Weinmann - ESL/Bilingual Dept., 7th grade, 8th grade Science teaching teams. – Computer teaching program Quia subscription – $300
The grant money will be used to subscribe to Quia, a powerful computer teaching program to develop teacher-made computer learning games, study guides and tests for teaching multi-level bilingual and science classes. http://www.quia.com/
Steve Beste – CMS Special Services Department - IRLA/writing instruction - Grade: 6-8 - $361
The grant funds will be used to provide the WPP online (Writing Practice Program) offered by ERB to the students. This web-site allows students to type their persuasive essays into a special writing program and receive instantaneous feedback in six criteria (Overall development, sentence structure, word choice, organization, mechanics and support). https://www.wpponline.com/Home/Welcome
Karen Rosnick/Calendar Kids (PRISM)- Food for the Hunger Banquet – $116.36
The eighth grade group Prism Calendar Kids will sponsor a Hunger Banquet to allow banquet guests to simulate a food distribution scenario related to problems of food insecurity. Mini grant funds will be used to purchase the food, beverages and supplies to create teaching materials to raise awareness of the number of hungry and homeless children in our world. Ginny McNeil, Christine Schaefer, Jeanne Rhein – Literacy Games – $303.16
The grant will be used to purchase literacy games for 7B, 7C & 7D students to play during recess on prescheduled “Games Galore Fridays”.
Denise Weber and Penni Bowen – Science – $360 each
Both science teachers have been awarded grants to purchase accurate electronic scales to be shared among the science teachers for use in labs.
